Legend states that Chaplin decided on the style of his costume “on the way to wardrobe” creating an outfit of contrasts: a too small vest, too big pants and shoes, and small hat. Whether this is true is up for debate, but whatever the beginnings of the ensemble, “by the time I walked onto the stage he was fully born.” And we are the beneficiaries of so lovable and universal a character that has endured the test of time.
