Dinosaurs: A Unit Study
A flexible, adaptable, and creative unit study
There are many ways to do a unit study. Most of our units are geared towards the kids in my home. Our unit studies are flexible and fluid; I follow the rabbit trails rather than a checklist or objectives. I gather books and each day I choose a couple to read. Sometimes after reading a book I switch the second book because it compliments the first book better than my original choice. Sometimes after the read aloud I grab picture books that will to help explain/clarify ideas that came up in our reading. There are times where we follow that rabbit trail further and add something to watch (like a nature lesson) or an activity. Or I make a note to add it the next day. I truly just see what happens and prepare to wing it as we go. At the end of each unit I look back and notice the big picture themes and take stock of the subjects and topics that we covered.
